Oh my god, can you make me a dress?

So people are starting Uni in the next few weeks and there will be a whole new breed to Fashion students hitting the BA Hons world.  Coming from  a Fashion PROMOTION graduates point of view I think it is necessary for someone who has walked in the carefully chosen footsteps of a Fashion student to prepare others (and those who will be talking to others about) wh at it is actually like for us to study fashion. Now I live with one of my best friends and she is a Fashion Design Graduate. She can whip up a dress or a skirt within a few hours whilst I sit there looking like she just found a unicorn at the end of a rainbow. I can't even manage to sew on a button...this leads me to my point. As a 'Fashion' student we know, within our own little Fashion bubble what the different areas of Fashion mean. There are however, people who just DO NOT GET IT. These are the people that you are guaranteed to have these 5 annoying/ soul destroying comments off when studying ...

As easy as A,B,C

With A-Level results being out last week, my social media pages have been over flowing with people who are going to uni or congratulating friends and siblings who have. I have also been asked countless times how uni is, what the course is like and what to take when the big move happens. My uni life didn't get off to the best of starts, I knew I wanted to do fashion but had no real idea that there were (what seemed liked) millions of different types of fashion course. After deferring a year due purely being too scared to go, I decided to study International Fashion Marketing at Manchester Met. Boy oh boy was that a mistake to make. Obviously this is my own personal opinion and experience and does eventually have a happy ending..but the day came to move to halls (I had never actually been inside the halls and didn't actually listen at the open day) I just had an idea that I was going to be Manchesters Carrie Bradshaw *rolls eyes* So my parents moved all my stuff and left me hap...

Platfform 13

Image
So it is finally the time to show everybody the new Platfform magazine. As part of our uni course, 8 of us girls were chosen to work creating the new edition of the unis fashion magazine. This year we wanted the magazine to focus on everything fun (and at some points close to the line) making people in industry level par with the people studying fashion. After four months of extreme stress and eating more than 8 fashion girls should humanly be able to eat, yesterday was the day that we finally got to see our work come together. I was lucky enough to have the role of Deputy Editor and pretty much loved every second of it (apart from the insane weight gain) We were also proud to announce that this year we created the magazine on glossy paper which was a huge step up from previous years where the magazine was printed on newspaper. Seeing our little glossy baby coming out of the boxes yesterday made every moment of stress and panic worth it. This cheesy face shows how excited I...

Blown cover shoot - behind the scenes

Image
So as you may already know this year in uni I am embarking on a group project and creating the new Platfform magazine. We have been lucky enough to have Ric Bower as one of our lecturers. Ric is founder and editor of the welsh fashion magazine Blown. As Wales is not exactly well known for it's fashion scene, Ric had worked wanders on getting up and coming talents published in his magazine.  Yesterday myself and two other course members were lucky enough to tag along with Ric to the shoot for the cover of his next issue! It was shot at Tactile Bosch studios, which is an amazing setting for edgy and stylish shoots (unfortunately it's closing down soon) but as soon as we walked in we knew that the shoot was going to look amazing! Even though the building wasn't exactly in great condition, the space and light and the structure created by the beams was amazing. We then got to watch as Ric and his team started to set up and prepare for the shoot. We had n...

Platfform 2012-2013

Right guys, I have just come back from my first actual lecture of second year in uni and I am freakishly looking forward to my next big project. For the last two years my course leader has created a magazine called Platfform. It is a fashion focused magazine that allows students in the second year of Fashion Promotion and Design to come together and help to create and publish the magazine show casing some of our work. Now as part of the first section of our brief our aim is to distribute and promote the current issue of Platfform (Platfform 12) to the right target audience. The magazine is free for everybody and is a great way of networking and introducing yourself to the new generation of Fashion lovers.  The best thing about Platfform (apart from the obvious) is that it is written in a completely different voice to some famous and loved fashion magazines out there. Focusing on enticing the younger generation the voices behind the magazine are the stud...
